Frequently Asked Questions
When I plant a tree in memory in California, can I choose the location?
Our memorial trees are planted in a fire-damaged area of a U.S. National Forest in California. We work with the U.S. Forest Service to identify the most urgent reforestation needs. Currently, the planting site is Sequoia National Forest. While we can't offer choice about planting locations, each in memoriam tree order goes to a place where it will make a lasting impact.
How can the California memorial trees be tracked?
A: Our “Find Trees” tool in the top menu bar allows you to look up trees by recipient name or order date. This feature provides access to planting maps, photos of baby trees, and forest information—adding meaning to every memorial tree sent to CA.
Will I get updates on the California trees?
Yes! We send occasional email updates with photos from forest visits, which happen right after the trees are planted and then about every 5-10 years. This keeps your memorial tree planting in California alive in memory over time, especially when you and your gift recipient are able to see updated tree growth photos. You may opt out of updates at any point.
Can the trees planted in memory be visited?
Definitely. Every gift of a memorial tree sent to be delivered in CA includes information about the planting area and directions for visiting. Although individual tree coordinates aren’t provided because so many trees are planted at once, many families find peace and comfort in visiting the planting location.
When will the memorial trees be planted in California?
To ensure timely and effective tree planting, we calculate the approximate number of tribute trees we’ll need each calendar year and then the Forest Service plants them in early summer. Once all those trees are assigned, we move on to a new reforestation site. This method lets even late-year gift recipients receive meaningful updates without having to wait for their trees to be planted the following summer. Rest easy knowing that every gift through Trees for a Change represents a real baby tree in a committed planting location.

How does planting trees in memory help fire-damaged forests in California?
Planting trees in memory helps forests heal after devastating fires. In many California forests, natural regrowth is very slow or impossible because fires burned so hot they destroyed the seed sources.
Your memorial trees fill in these bare areas, bringing back habitat for wildlife, preventing soil erosion, and cleaning our air and water. Each tree you plant in memory does double duty – it honors someone special while helping nature recover in a place that really needs it.
